Kindergarten Registration Information

Kindergarten is an exciting time for your child and family! We are here to help make enrollment into Kindergarten go as smoothly as possible.

Children entering Kindergarten must be 5 years old on or before September 15, 2024. Students must provide: proof of age, an up-to-date immunization certificate filed with the school nurse by the first day of school, a dental screening, and vision screening.

Are you moving into the Winterset District with a student who is in Pre-school through 12th grade?  At the Registrar's Office, we are here to help make enrollment go as smoothly as possible.  Please contact the Registrar's Office as soon as you know you will be living in our district. 

 New students will register using  ONLINE REGISTRATION.  

  • ALL new students to our district must provide Proof of Residency, a Certificate of Immunization (Pre-School & Kindergarten only), and fill out a Student Record Request. These forms may be faxed or emailed to the Registrar's office to begin the enrollment process.

 All families/students will register using our Online Registration process.

New families will need to provide proof of residency and fill out a Student Request for Records for each student you are enrolling. These documents will need to be turned into the Registrar's Office at the
Winterset Administration Office, 303 Wambold Dr.

Welcome to Winterset Community School District!  We're glad to you have as a part of our community.  Our school district is located in Madison County, home to the "Covered Bridges of Madison County".  Additional information about our community can be found HERE .

Enrollment Requirements

Pre-School Requirements:

  • Online Registration Completed

  • Proof of Age (birth certificate, adoption record, passport, or other legal document)

  • Immunization record

  • Current Physical

Kindergarten Requirements:

  • Proof of Age (birth certificate, adoption record, passport, or other legal document) - unless child attended PK in district

  • Immunization record

  • Vision Screening

  • Dental Screening

Other Requirements:

  • 7th grade – 1 dose of meningococcal vaccine received on or after age 10 – a booster dose will be needed at age 16. This new requirement is in addition to the already required T-dap.

  • 9th Grade: Dental Screening

  • 12th grade - 2 doses of meningococcal vaccines, or one dose if received when a student was 16 years of age or older.

Open Enrollment
WCSD will participate in open enrollment as a receiving district.  As a receiving district, the Board will allow nonresident students, who meet the legal requirements, to open enroll into the school district.  The Board will have complete discretion to determine the attendance center of the students attending the school district under open enrollment. Open enrollment is governed by Iowa Code 282.18 and Iowa Administrative Code 281.17.

During the 2024 Legislative Session, the State of Iowa made a change to the Open Enrollment Deadline: for the 2024-2025 school year, the Open Enrollment Application deadline is June 30, 2024.  For the 2025-26 school year and beyond, the deadline will be March 1st.

How do I know if my kindergartner is ready for school? 
If the student is born on or before September 15th of the current year they are eligible to begin kindergarten.  Knowing your child is ready for school is a decision that parents need to make concerning their child.

Does the district offer preschool?
Winterset Community Schools offers 4 year old preschool serving the district's children.  For more information, please see the Preschool web page.

Is there transportation provided by the district?
Transportation is provided based on Iowa code and WCSD's board policies.

High school students must live 3 miles or more from their school of attendance to qualify for busing. 4th - 8th grade must live 2 miles or more from their school of attendance to qualify for transportation. Shuttle service is available to 4th - 8th-grade students that fall into the walk zone. The morning shuttles from the Elementary to Middle School & Junior High between 7:33-7:40 am. Afternoon shuttles from the Middle School & Junior High to Elementary.

Kindergarten - 3rd grade: all students that live or attend in-home daycares beyond 5 city blocks from the Elementary qualify for transportation.All 4-year-old preschool students qualify during regular school transportation hours  6:00-8:00 am and  3:00-4:30 pm  Mid-day transportation is limited to in-town only.

Daycare businesses must transport their students to and from the student's assigned schools.
